What is a Cartridge Filter and How Does It Work?

Aug 24,2022
A cartridge filter is a tubular filtration device that can be used in a variety of industries to meet a range of filtration requirements. Cartridges are housed in or within a housing and are used to remove unwanted particles, contaminants, and chemicals from liquids. As the filter element flows within the housing and through the filter element, the filter element is exposed to the water, liquid, or solvent that needs to be filtered. Cartridge filters can also remove submicron particles.

What are the two types of cartridge filters?

You can find two types of cartridge filters:

a)Surface filters

b) Depth filter.

Cartridges are housed in or within a housing and are used to remove unwanted particles, contaminants, and chemicals from liquids.

Surface filter

Surface filters do not let solids/contaminants in through the media, they keep them out of the filter media.

Surface filtration refers to the flow of fluid through a layer of material that confines surface particles. The cartridge filter size that restricts particles entering the media is larger than the average pore size of the media. Over time, the surface filter will clump on the outside and restrict flow within acceptable limits. At this point, the filter surface must be cleaned and reused. Surface filters are relatively inexpensive and have a short shelf life.

Depth filter

Depth filters capture all contaminants, contaminants, and solids in the media. Depth filtration refers to thicker layers of media and/or multiple layers that set a tortuous path for particles and restrict their passage. The particle size is much smaller than the average pore size of the medium. Contaminants pass through the depth filter and become trapped there, and gradually, the pores in the filter become clogged and must be cleaned with reverse fluid or replaced with new media. Compared to surface filters, depth filters are expensive but have a longer shelf life. High mechanical strength of filter media

When to replace the filter element?

It is important to know when to replace the filter element. A filter element may come with a general guideline indicating the number of days it will work - for example, every 30 days or every 45 days, depending on its dirt holding capacity. However, the days of use of the filter element also depend on the concentration of contaminants in the liquid.

When your differential pressure reaches a preset value (eg 10psi), you know the filter element is clogged and needs to be replaced.

Here's a step-by-step guide to properly and safely changing your liquid filter!

Shut down the system and depressurize it.

Open the exhaust valve and drain.

Clean the drain valve

Remove the housing cover.

Remove wing nut and alignment plate.

Carefully remove the spring from the top of each cartridge filter. Make sure that the spring does not fall into the housing.

Carefully pull out the filter element.

Inspect the enclosure for signs of corrosion or dirt residue. Clean the case if needed.

Remove the protective covers of the new cartridge filters and install them in the housing.

Handle your filter elements carefully and use the calibration plate to place them in the housing.

Once all elements are in place, reinstall the spring, calibration plate, and wing nut.

Make sure all of these accessories are in good condition and securely in place.

Clean and lubricate the O-ring, then replace the housing cover.

Screw the housing cover into place.

Close the drain valve

Remove any air from the system by running water through the filter.

Close the exhaust valve
