The Complete Guide to Improving Pool Filtration

Apr 22,2022
Your swimming pool should be a warm, clear oasis in your backyard where you can relax from the hectic routine of your daily life. But when the clarity of the water isn't up to par, your pool can sometimes devolve into a labor-intensive chore rather than relaxation.

When your water is cloudy or dirty, it's the culprit in a few cases, although it's not always the problem with your filter. Regular maintenance of the pool filter helps keep the filter running smoothly.

Not all pool filters are created equal, as there are three main types of pool filters that purify and clean water in different ways. The three types of filters are sand filters, diatomaceous earth filters, and cartridge pond filters.

No matter what type of filter you use, there are a few things you can do to improve your filter's performance when your water clarity isn't quite satisfactory. Read on to learn some tips.

Pool sand filter

Sand filters are the simplest type of filter available. They use sand as a filter medium. Simply put, a sand filter works by forcing pool water through a sand bed, which traps and traps debris and dirt. The filtered dirt is then backwashed from the filter by reversing the water flow.

To improve sand filter performance and avoid some of the common problems associated with it, be sure to use a sand filter cleaner before backwashing the sand bed. A great tool in anyone's toolbox with a sand filter is alum, also known as aluminum sulfate. Alum can be added to the pool water. On contact with water, it turns into a gel-like substance that binds with dirt, making it more effectively trapped in the filter's sand bed.

Pool cartridge filter

Cartridge filters are very convenient because they use a prefabricated cartridge filled with pleated fabric as the filter medium. The filter forces the water through the pleats, trapping particles and dirt in the water. The pleats fill the filter material over time and must be removed from the filter and rinsed.

Cartridge filters are prone to calcium deposits in hard water areas, so adding a water softener is important if you know the water in your area is hard. You can refresh your filter cartridge filter by soaking it in filter cleaner overnight, then washing off the deposits the next morning.

Always use clarifier products in conjunction with cartridge filters. It helps your filter run at maximum capacity by coagulating dirt and debris into easier-to-filter clumps. Try adding pulp fibers to the skimmer as well. It helps remove dirt without damaging the filter pleats. It is important to note that the filter element wears out after about 20 flush cycles, so you can improve the performance of the filter by changing the filter element at appropriate intervals.

Clean pool

Obviously, if vegetation or other debris fell into your pool during the winter, now is the time to remove it to prevent contamination or other damage to your pool. Also, you should vacuum the sides and floor of the pool thoroughly in the spring for a good cleaning base.

Clean pool accessories

Pool-centric living is not just about the pool itself, as you have many accessories such as buoys, pool furniture, and toys that are part of the pool experience. Take the time to clean these accessories well so they too will be ready for the start of pool season.

Reserve materials

While many people hire pool services to maintain the water quality of their pools, some pool owners still take a do-it-yourself approach. Spring is a great time to replenish pool chemicals and other supplies. You may be able to take advantage of sale or bulk pricing, so look for deals on the supplies you need.

Whether it's a thorough cleaning or swimming pool maintenance, spring is the perfect season to get your pool ready for the busiest time of the year. To learn more or to purchase filters for your pool, please contact us.
