How to Maintain a Solar Pool Pump?

Mar 29,2022
A solar pool pump requires little maintenance during its lifetime. Of course, as with any device, there are sometimes issues that need to be dealt with. The simple guide below will walk you through the most common maintenance issues you may encounter with your solar pool pump.

Basic Solar Pool Pump Maintenance

The only regular maintenance your solar pool pump needs is emptying the filter basket. The filter basket holds all the debris flushed from the pool water. Cleaning the basket is important because if debris builds up, it can get into the working parts of the pump and cause malfunction or damage.

How often should the filter basket be cleaned? It's entirely up to you as there is no recommended schedule. Many factors can affect how often you clean your basket:

You notice the amount of debris (leaves etc.) falling into the pool

The amount of debris dropped may vary seasonally

How do I clean the grocery basket?

1. Power off or disconnect the pump

2. Open the lid and remove any visible debris from the basket

3. Check for openings that bring debris out of the pump and remove debris from there

4. Put the lid on

5. Turn the pump back on or reconnect the power

Leak Repair of Solar Pool Pumps

Leaks are one of the most common problems with all pool pumps. Leaks can occur in many places on a pump but are usually easy to fix.

If water leaks from the plugs, you may only need to tighten them. This does not require special technical skills, you should be able to handle it.

This is also an easy fix if water is dripping from the threaded joint. In this case, the threaded fitting should be replaced with a high-temperature fitting. High-temperature fittings are more durable and reliable and are inexpensive and easy to install

If water is leaking from the seals between the wet and dry parts of the pump, the seals may be worn and need to be replaced. This part is cheap and easy to replace.

Solar Pool Pump Motor Troubleshooting

If you start your pool pump and find that the motor isn't running at all, don't panic. Most likely this is also a simple problem and can be solved quickly.

First, turn off the pump or disconnect the power supply. Then inspect the trash basket and the opening to the trash basket for debris that may be trapped. After removing any debris, restart the pump. If the motor still doesn't work, other minor issues need to be checked.

Check all pump motors responsible for their work. Parts to check to include:

Circuit breakers

Switch

Time Clock

Wiring connections

You can easily fix these little problems and get your pool pump running again. If these fixes still don't solve the problem, you should contact a professional for help.

Solar Pool Pump Noise Motor Troubleshooting

Modern pool pumps operate fairly quietly. If you notice an unusually high amount of noise from the pump, it could be a warning sign of a malfunction.

If the bearings in the pump are damaged, they will make a high-pitched squeal. Bearings should be replaced at this point to prevent more serious damage.

When your solar pool pump has not been running for a long time, there may be a blockage somewhere in the pipeline or the pump, and it will make a grinding sound. Again, this blockage should be removed to prevent any damage to the pump.

Other noises may be caused by damage to the pump's impeller or internal fan - this type of damage usually means your pump needs to be replaced.

If you have any questions about pool pump maintenance or are unable to resolve any issues you are having, we strongly recommend that you contact pool maintenance professional for assistance.
