How to choose the right size swimming pool pump?

Mar 14,2022
If you want to build a swimming pool for your house, there are many things you need to consider during and after construction. One of them is the choice of pool pumps because there are different operating systems and pump functions to choose from. To make your decision easier and help you choose the right pump, we've put together some pool pump guides that we hope will help you.

What does a swimming pool pump do?

A pool pump is a machine that is responsible for circulating the water in the pool. It is also the component that keeps the pool in good condition and suitable for swimming. A pump will draw water from the pool and send it to a filtration system, heater and chlorinator for treatment. The pool pump then returns the treated water to the pool for the family to enjoy.

Components of a swimming pool pump

Three main components make the pool pump work: the motor, the impeller and the housing. The motor starts the entire pumping process by rotating the impeller, an upside-down blade that draws water from the pool and pushes it towards the filter.

The housing is usually made of a high-quality material that is lightweight, rust-proof, and resistant to a lot of heat and pressure. It holds the impeller and motor, as well as small parts of the pump such as the filter basket, diffuser, and cover.

The filter basket is also an important part of the pump as it collects debris such as pebbles, leaves and twigs before they reach the impeller and can damage it. Make sure to clean the basket regularly to maintain its efficiency.

Types of pool pumps

When shopping for a pool pump, you'll find four types to choose from. They are classified according to the amount of speed they can generate.

Single Speed Pump
The first pool pump ever made had a single speed, which meant the impeller would spin at a single speed produced by the motor horsepower. There are many new single-speed pump products on the market today. They are the cheapest pumps you can buy for your pool.

Two-Speed Pump
This type of pool pump is capable of high and low speeds. The high speed is similar to a single-speed pump and is ideal for usually sized swimming pools. On the other hand, lower speeds are more energy efficient and better suited for small pools.

Multi-Speed Pump
Pool pump with multi-speed capability. Each speed is fixed and preset by the manufacturer. You can easily switch from one speed to another depending on the size and requirements of your pool.

Variable Speed Pump
Equipped with a variable speed controller, this pool pump allows you to set the speed to your liking. Some of today's variable speed pool pumps can automatically adjust speed on their own. It is the most expensive type of swimming pool pump as it also has the highest efficiency, rightfully so.

Functional characteristics of swimming pool pumps

In addition to the different types, it is also important to understand the various functions of swimming pool pumps.

Horsepower
The speed at which the pump sucks water, cleans it, and returns to the pool depend on its horsepower. The more horsepower it has, the faster it gets the job done. A more powerful pool pump will also allow you to operate it less often and for less time, which will help you save on energy costs in the long run.

In-ground or above-ground
Some pumps are built specifically for in-ground pools, while others are designed for above-ground pools. Most pumps for in-ground swimming pools are placed above the water level, so they have self-priming capabilities to lift the water vertically.

Electrical system
Some pumps run on 110 volts while others use a 220-volt plug. Some require hard wiring to your property's electrical system, while others simply plug into an outlet. Whichever pool pump you choose, make sure your home's electrical system can accommodate it.
Turnover Rate - When shopping for a pool pump, you will find the turnover rate for different models in gallons per minute (GPM). This refers to the amount of water the pump can filter per minute. The ideal pump must have a turnover rate that can clean the entire pool in 8 hours. It will ensure that you can completely flip your pool every day to keep it clean and tidy.

Water features
You may want your pool pump to jet fountains for a more fun pool experience. Some swimming pool models have this and other water features such as waterfalls, bubblers, and sprinklers. Find a pump with the water features your home swimming pool needs.
